{"id":13588,"date":"2010-02-10T22:21:50","date_gmt":"2010-02-10T22:21:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.widmann.org.uk\/?p=2056"},"modified":"2010-02-10T22:21:50","modified_gmt":"2010-02-10T22:21:50","slug":"wholl-benefit-from-av-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/widmanniana.org\/blog\/wholl-benefit-from-av-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Who&#039;ll benefit from AV?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s an interesting article on the BBC analysing <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/uk_politics\/8506306.stm\">what would have happened if AV had been introduced in 1983<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The assumption is that people wouldn&#8217;t have made any change to their first preference (and I think this is quite doubtful), but it&#8217;s still very interesting:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/uk_politics\/8506306.stm\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/politics.widmann.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/av.png\" alt=\"Change in seats\" title=\"Change in seats\" width=\"100%\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2058\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The conclusion is there wouldn&#8217;t have been any change to the winning party, but interestingly, the Conservatives would have been completely wiped out and replaced by the LibDems back in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>I would prefer a proper proportional system (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/D'Hondt_method\">d&#8217;Hondt<\/a>), but I do think <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Instant-runoff_voting\">AV<\/a> is better than <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First-past-the-post\">FPTP<\/a>, mainly because it doesn&#8217;t require the voter to decide on their preferred candidate&#8217;s electability prior to casting their vote.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I do expect the Tories to win the election, and they will unfortunately never allow the AV referendum to go ahead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s an interesting article on the BBC analysing what would have happened if AV had been introduced in 1983.
